Better Business Bureau Fraud Department Impostor Reports & Reviews (1)

• Aug 18, 2023

On Aug. 17, 2023, Robert Archer called from the "Better Business Bureau Fraud Department". He asked if I had gotten calls regarding winnings from Publishers Clearing House or Readers Digest or suspicious credit card issues. I told him I had gotten several calls including one for my Bank of America credit card recently and that I had called Bank of America directly about this.

He asked if I had ever entered these contests to which I replied in the 1970s and 80s. He said the reason I have gotten so many calls is that I am on a Winners' Intake List and that I had won an automobile and should have gotten a Certified Check also. I never got this. I told him I had kept records of the numbers used for the calls in some message books. He wanted me to get those and mentioned some were probably from outside the US like Jamaica. I said that some were but that it would take me a while to get the numbers. He said he could remove my name from the Winners Intake List right there and then. During the conversation, he said he would give me a verification code, but he never did. He seemed to be anxious to get me off the Winners Intake List and said I would get no more calls if I were off it, and that I would get the automobile and Certified Check. If I did not want these, I could donate them to charity. He said James Carson of Readers Digest had authorized the check or had some connection with it. He also mentioned James Carson is Johnny Carson's son. I asked for Robert Archer's phone number, so I could get back to him with the fraud numbers in my note books. He mentioned it was 801-893-7451. Then we hung up.

I was suspicious, so I looked him up in the call log. That gave no number and just had "Private Caller". I looked up his phone number and found it was from Alta or Salt Lake City, Utah. Also I looked up Johnny Carson who never had a son named James. I think this is a new scam angle to find out certain information from senior citizens in order to cheat them out of money by getting certain information, banking numbers and otherwise.
