Best Family Spaniels Reports & Reviews (1)

My parents were looking online to buy a new dog...a few months after their beloved dog of 13 years passed away. They found a cute picture online, with a sales price much lower than purebred spaniels are sold for, and clicked on the image which took them to a website called Best Family Spaniels. There was no phone number or email address to contact the breeder; the only option was to complete a form.

Once the form was submitted, my parents were contacted (by email) by someone named Francois Oliver, and thus began an email conversation that lead to my parents signing a contract for a black cocker spaniel named "Berry". My parents never spoke with anyone and saw only one image of the dog they wanted (image attached.)

Francois convinced my parents that the only way to pay for the dog was through Paypal. When my parents explained that they do not have PayPal, Francois told my father to go to Walmart to buy multiple Vanilla Visa Gift cards. He then told my dad to photograph the gift cards and email him the images. Once Francois received the gift card numbers, he would begin the process for transportation from Texas (location of the breeder) to California (where my parents live).

An email was finally sent to my parents explaining that the dog would arrive safely from Arizona (mid transport stop) and would arrive at my parent's home on Tuesday, November 16 at 4:30 pm. The dog would be brought by a dog nanny. My father never received a name for the transportation company or the nanny. All communication was done using this vague email [email protected] .

The morning of the 16th, my parents were contacted again, by email, explaining that the dog could not be shipped to CA since it did not have insurance. That would cost my parents an additional $4,200. When my father said they would not be paying one penny more, the transportation contact said, that he could take $1,500 off the cost and only needed $2,700.  My parents decided not to send the money, but are very worried about the dog and hopeful that it may still arrive.

This morning I was able to check the charges made on the visa gift cards, and they all had been used in full. All transactions were made to non-sensical company names and most of the charges were made at the exact same moment, suggesting that multiple people were charging at the same time. One of the charges was for "hemaliel"; when I searched that name on google, it was associated with many scam-notification sites. Three charges were to eBay, 3 charges to Paypal, one to The Epoch Times, and one to loccca.

Upon review of the breeder's website, I noticed many red flags: many grammatical mistakes...including in the "testimonials" they posted! There was no phone number, no address, no social media links, no accreditation by ScamPulse.com or the AKC. In one testimonial, they reference a different breeder named "Outstanding Spaniels" as if it was copied and pasted from another website. Also, the website is not normal website but rather a wixsite.com .The biggest red flag was under their "Health Guarantee" section. It states, "Within ten days of purchasing your new puppy, you must take him/her to a licensed veterinarian for an examination. If the veterinarian determines, within ten days of purchase, that your dog is clinically ill or has died...you have the following options:Return the dog for a complete refund.Return the dog for a replacement dog of equal value.

Return a dead dog?

My parents shared their email correspondence with Francois and he was constantly explaining that he needed the gift cards to do x, y, z. There was very little discussion of the dog. In Fact, Francoise never references the dog "Berry", but rather a dog named "Ashley" that is also listed for sale.

These scammers know what they are doing...mostly relying on the emotional pull that would compel an animal lover to stay engaged.

I hope this story prevents others from being hurt and losing money.
