Initially, I was skeptical because the communication was very informal, but I rationalized it as being typical for a personal assistant role. Berard even sent me a selfie along with his driver's license, which showed his full name and address (Berard Michael Joseph Leon, **** ******* **., Roanoke VA, ID number *********). The person in the image matched the person on the license.
My job duties were outlined as follows:
Donation management
Scheduling meetings
Booking travel and accommodations
Performing market research
Purchasing supplies
My first task was to send a donation to "Habitat for Humanity," with the contact person being Fantashia Wester (###-###-####). Berard sent me a check for $1,200, which I deposited into my Capital One account. Once the funds cleared, I followed Berard's instructions and sent $1,000 to Fantashia via Zelle in two installments of $500 each, noting in the memo that it was Berard's donation. I kept $200 as payment for my services per Berard's instructions.
Shortly after, I began feeling uneasy about the position and decided to resign. I thought that was the end of it until today (07/2/24) when the $1,200 check was reversed from my account. In my original call to Capital One, I was informed that this could be due to the check being reported as lost or fraudulent. I attempted to recover the $1,000 from Fantashia, but she refused to return the money. Berard also refused to refund me when I contacted him at his supposed phone number (###-###-####).
Using the service "PeopleFinders", I discovered that Fantashia lives at 1** ******* ***, Athens, GA 30606, works at Recare, and her partner is Willie Wester or Webster (phone: ###-###-####). I reached out to Willie, since his area code matched Berard's supposed number, but he denied knowing Fantashia, despite evidence suggesting they are connected. Willie resides at **** ******** **** *** **, Charleston, SC 29406, and his email is [email protected].
