I listed in item for sale on Craigslist. I filled in the required telephone and email boxes and within minutes I had several responses for the item that was for sale. I was contacted by text messages from the potential buyer out of California and they asked for me to hold the item for an additional amount of money and they would send a check through the post service. A week later I check came in the mail with the agreed-upon price for the item as well as an extra amount of money to go towards movers to take the item to California as agreed upon. I took the check to the local bank and asked if I could verify through them its legitimacy. My bank called the bank listed on the check gave,them the company name on the check and the identifying numbers for the account at the bottom of the check. The bank in California shared information bank-to-bank that this was a fraudulent check/account and recommended that I contact the Better Business Bureau. I would like to mention that at the bottom of the check for anyone interested instead of listing a routing number first and then the account number with the check number following, the first set of numbers was actually the ones that correspond with the check number in the upper right-hand corner of this supposed to check. I found this odd when I was talking to my banking agent before she called to confirm its validity. Please note that the check is unremarkable, on the back it says original document, has all the appropriate lines and instructions one would find on a check, and has fine print stating warning this document has security related features in the paper and it also has a little padlock on the front that says "security features" on the right-hand edge written vertically. Again, the back of the check looks normal in every way as I stated previously.
