Dear Beachside Bar Cafe managers/owner,
Last week, on March 15th, we five senior citizens (3 older than 85 years) went to the Beachside Bar Cafe in Goleta Beach. On arrival we told the staff that one member in our party was having a birthday. We did not have any problems with the food or the service. However, at the time of check out, our waiter presented us with the bill, which had a $1,000.00 overcharge.
We discussed the error first with our server and then the manager, neither of whom was willing to assume any responsibility for this "error". After pushing for an explanation, we ultimately were told that this was "a method that the restaurant uses to denote a birthday dinner". We were also told that there is no birthday charge. We therefore asked how the mistake could be made, that we would actually be presented a bill with a $1,000 overcharge. We were reassured that this mistake has never happened before. However, again we found that no one would accept responsibility for the error, and the manager could not explain how they would prevent this from happening again or if it had happened before and a customer wrongly overpaid, perhaps if both the patron AND the cashier did not call attention to the "error". The restaurant manager was rude and made no effort whatsoever to apologize, accept responsibility for the error, make any type of amends with us about this mistake, nor show us how they might prevent such an "error" in the future.
We are very concerned that unsuspecting and especially senior citizens could be falsely subject to a $1,000 overcharge that this facility might "accidentally let slip through the cracks". Many senior citizens have cognitive and vision problems. A busy or more trusting or disabled client may well have signed off their visa, with such an error never found.
We believe that the ScamPulse.com, and if necessary, any law enforcement authorities should perform an appropriate investigation to be sure that this establishment is not intentionally taking advantage of senior or disabled citizens or any other individuals for that matter.
