Bay Area Taco Beer Festival Reports & Reviews (1)

- Sunnyvale, CA, USA

We bought tickets for the Bay Area Taco & Beer Festival. With fees, they were about $42 each for 3 hours of unlimited beer tastings and tacos. Days before the event, all attendees were notified that the souvenir glasses would not be there in time and that people could pick them up on Tuesday. Since the glasses were advertised as included in the ticket price, the festival did not meet its end of the agreement. It told attendees that they could pick them up on Tuesday as if having to drive back (especially in the Bay Area) for a tasting glass is an acceptable solution.

Continuing on, it was not unlimited tacos. That was the big draw. The Facebook page stated "Guests will experience unlimited pours of 80+ selection of craft beers from local and regional breweries as well as unlimited taco tastings from dozens of top restaurants & food trucks in California." For 3 hours, we had a total of 2 street tacos. Why? One, there were not enough vendors there to accommodate the thousands of people. "Dozens" was more like 15 total food vendors, not enough for the thousands of attendees. In addition, multiple taco vendors notified us that their contract stated that they only had to provide a certain number of free tacos before they could start charging. What!? We waited 30 minutes in line for one vendor only to be the first people to be rejected of free tacos. The vendor literally told us "we have now met our quota of free tacos and from here on out, all food is available for purchase". We were all lied to. The free tacos were not unlimited. The vendors were told they only had to give out so many free ones until they could charge for everything. This was an elaborate bait and switch.

As for the beer, the Facebook page (which was used as the primary channel of communication) stated "Guests will experience unlimited pours of 80+ selection of craft beers from local and regional breweries as well as unlimited taco tastings from dozens of top restaurants & food trucks in California." At best, there were 60 options from 30 vendors which wasn't enough for a crowd that site. Many of the beers were warm and lines were at least 10 minutes long for maybe a 3 ounce pour. Vendors starting running out of beer at 4PM, 1 hour into the main event! This causes other lines to get longer and by 5PM, 2/3 of the beer vendors had closed up shop with an hour remaining. This caused other lines to be excessively long and not worth it. If you start running out of beer then it's not unlimited which was how it was marketed.

For a festival held outdoor in 83 degree heat, you would think a food & beverage festival/event would be required to offer some type of free water for its guests. It did not. There were no water fountains or easy accessible water for guests. At best, you would have had to wait 30 minutes in a taco line to buy a bottle of water. That was the only way to keep hydrated.

Upon arrival, our IDs were checked. (Some guests claim that never happened because they needed to expedite the process). Our tickets were never scanned! They just looked at digital tickets and put a 2 inch rip into paper ones! This meant that anyone could have walked in (with the same exact ticket) allowing for overcrowding and the aforementioned long lines. They never had a system to scan tickets, likely in an attempt to save money. There was no security or metal detectors to check bags. For an event as crowded and dense as this one, that needs to be a must.

The event was understaffed. Some beer vendors were stepping in for others and helping pour when they ran out. They couldn't keep up with the lines.

Not a single person from the event could be found on the grounds. There was no one there to answer questions or take responsibility, likely because they knew what was going to happen.

The Bay Area Taco & Beer festival was a scam with blatantly false advertising in an attempt to deceit its customers. Attendees and vendors were told two different things causing frustration and disappointment. Please avoid this festival in the future as some commenters on Facebook stated that this happened last year too but organizers removed negative comments and complaints.
