We were looking to purchase a newt from backwaterreptiles.com and it looked like they had two websites under the same company name. The other site (https://backwaterreptilesandlizardsmonitor.com/) was newer and had things in stock so I thought they might have just upgraded their site. I placed and order and it said someone would reach out to coordinate payment instead of letting me pay immediately online. Then they texted me late at night and were trying to get me to pay via Zelle and wouldn't use an online payment portal which was a red flag. To be honest sometimes people who sell reptiles are a bit eccentric so I thought it was weird but kept talking to them. I looked up reviews on ScamPulse.com and google and it looks like those people have been impersonating the company and sending animals who are horribly abused or dead (the reviews have countless pictures of these tortured animals) then refusing to give refunds to customers. It looks like this has dramatically increased over the past few months. I've reached out to the other business via email and shared this info as well, but animals are actively being harmed in this scam and these people need to be held accountable.
