ATT/DirectTV - IMPOSTER Reports & Reviews (1)

I am a victim of spoofing by a company claiming to be AT&T/DirectTV, my TV service provider. I lost a total of $1,275 in eBay gift card purchases made on 2/1 & 2/2.

After checking my TV bill a couple weeks ago, I had called DirectTV asking for a reduction in my monthly bill. They said they did not have any offers available at the time, but asked me to check the following week.

Then this week, I rec’d a vmail from the spoofers claiming to be DirectTV, stating they had a promo to reduce my TV bill by 50%, and gave me the number to callback. When I called back, I honestly thought I was talking to DirectTV with the same/similar greeting and menu options, reciprocating the real company.

I called them back on 2/1; they said I can pay half for my services but they would need the first year paid in advance, in $425 worth of eBay gift cards...then the 2nd year, I would be charged $30/month. They said the eBay gift card purchase would need to be made by noon (12pm) the following day (2/2).

I am not a fan of making monthly payments on anything, so I ran out to Hy-Vee over my lunch hour on 2/2 to meet the requested deadline...as directed, I purchased (3) gift cards totaling $425 and provided the PIN numbers from the cards, using authorization code #DTV245. Later in the day, I rec’d several text notifications from the spoofing company (DTV) saying there was an error, asking me to call them at 844-216-5852...texting me from several different #833 & #844 numbers, listed below (the number to call them back at was consistently the same, 844-216-5852).

Rec’d texts from:

# 844-713-0635

# 833-948-3662

# 833-947-3772

# 844-702-2326

At the end of my workday on 2/2, I called them back, they said they rec’d notification from eBay that the gift cards are no longer accepted from Hy-Vee, and they asked me to purchase from another merchant, recommending Fareway. They said I would be fully refunded the initial $425 + $100 gift card for my inconvenience. I was frustrated, but stopped at Fareway and purchased a 2nd round of $425 eBay gift cards then provided them the pin numbers from those (3) cards. During that same call I was told there was an error (they needed the amounts with each of the Pins as they were being provided, and I needed to go back to Fareway to do the process all over again. It was a major red flag; however, reluctantly and more frustrated, I drove myself back to Fareway again on 2/2, purchased a 3rd round of eBay gift cards totaling $425...they told me there was another error and I needed to make a 4th trip. I was already livid by that point, and I told them, “NO!” We quarreled for awhile before the spoofer said, “sorry for your loss” and hung up on me.

I then called DirectTV and they confirmed I was scammed...I can’t believe the nerve of jerks who prey upon innocent people who work hard for their money and are barely getting by in life. Justice needs to be served; need to be stopped before more people are financially burdened by this inequity/absurdity!
