The caller said they were employed by AT&T and direct tv. Told me it was a promotion offered by Apple in conjunction with DIRECTV- I had to pay 10 months in advance with Apple gift cards and my bill would be reduced by 1/2- for 26 months no contract involved. Used my $500 of Apple gift cards -then called back and told me they were not activated correctly and I needed to buy more and they would send me a check for the $500 that I spent on the gift cards from CVS-

A robo call claiming to be AT&T DirecTV calls constantly from different number. They leave a voicemail message with 50% off deal on their service.

- Elmira, NY, USA

A pre recorded greeting in a female voice spoke as if in real time offering a 50%discount on your cable bill asking you to say yes or no if interested and when you do the call is disconnected. When the number is call back, The call can't be completed as dialed.

A call to my cellphone made the offer to reduce my DirectTV bill by 50 percent. The call was represented as coming from ATT DirectTV. I don't know how they knew I was a customer of DirectTV with my phone number.

The offer was portrayed as a partnership between ATT and EBay. I made a return call and heard the familiar ATT automated service. This sounded very authentic. I pushed the appropriate number and was put on hold. Again the on-hold recording was very authentic. I've heard the same message when calling ATT.

Here's the pitch. If I pay 8 months in advance, I can have my DirectTV bill reduced to $50 a month for three years. I will also receive a premium movie service for free for the same three year period.

These guys are very effective. To prove they are serious, the put a $100 deposit in my ATT account, which I could see online, to pay me back for the payment I had already made. They also added Cinemax to my television package. This package was indeed added to my channel lineup as I talked to the "sales rep" on the phone. A $100 visa card to be sent later was thrown in as incentive. I believe I inadvertently gave them my passcode (not my password) initially as they were pulling up my information. That must have enabled them to break into my account and manipulate my television package and put money in my account. It was very convincing.

Here is the pitch. The $400 had to be paid up front in the form of eBay prepaid cards. It was spun as a promotion between eBay and ATT. I feel pretty foolish now, but it sounded like a possible promotion to encourage the use of eBay, and I fell for it. The manipulation of my account and the counterfeit telephone messaging was, as I said, very effective.

I purchased two eBay cards worth $200 each from a local grocery store. I called back and gave the scammers the card information. I was told I would receive a confirmation email from ATT the following day.

Then I was pitched another promotion with a similar pattern -- a reduction in my cell phone bill -- cut in half for four years. This time the payment would be made also using eBay cards in the amount of $1,000. I would get a free new iPhone as part of the deal. Initially I expressed interest in this offer as well, but when the time came to spend $1,000 more in eBay cards, I couldn't do it. I called ATT on another line and asked about the promotion. I was assured ATT would never ask for money this way (which I should have realized $400 earlier) and told to protect my personal information.

So I called the scammers back, expressed my reluctance, and asked for more time. I found information about this scan on the Internet later on Saturday afternoon.

I called the counterfeit number back today (Monday, Nov. 2, 2020), two days after accepting the first offer, and told the sales rep (who at this time sounded very familiar. Although he used different names each time, I'm certain it was the same voice, and had an Indian or Pakistani accent, if I had to place it. I told him I had changed my mind, and wanted my money returned.

I didn't think there was a chance of getting my money back, but I was curious how the scammers would handle my request. After some talking he told me since the Cell Phone deal was pending, all I had to do was resolve the outstanding deal (send in $1,000 in gift cards) and I would get a full refund. If I didn't do that, I was out of luck. I argued with him, and he informed me I had been wasting his time and would not be getting any money back, then he hung up on me.

The legitimate ATT reps I talked to were very good, but should have been more informed about this scam. I have changed my passcode and password on my DirectTV account. I also cancelled the Cinemax package, which would have added about $15 to my monthly bill.

The $100 credit remains in my DirectTV account

Three weeks ago we received a call that purported to be from AT&T/Direct TV (our internet and cable TV provider). It offered an upgrade to our current service that would include premium channels at a 50% discount from our current contract. We needed to pay six months in advance, using E-Bay gift cards because "E-Bay is sponsoring this promotion."

The caller left a message. When we called the number, it sounded very convincing, but became suspicious when it had to be done that same day, and they needed the last four digits of the Social Security number of the primary account holder.

We hung up, called AT&T, and they knew nothing about such a promotional program.

Today we got the same phone message.
