My mom just passed suddenly and I have been taking care of my dad with almost everything. He didn't think his direct tv bill was worth $120 a month with it being just him at the house watching tv. He was called over and over again on his cell phone at night and finally answered. How lucky was he?! He wanted his bill cheaper and here was someone calling him from Direct TV personally to offer him a deal of a lifetime. They would cut his bill in half and he would only pay 62$ a month but he had to pay a year up front with ebay gift cards because of a promotional deal they had going on with ebay. They gave him a code, and told him to go to Kroger, get 2 $200 ebay gift cards and to call them back with the code they had told him earlier, as well as the number off the back of the gift cards so he could make this payment. They even offered free movie channels that were added to his tv right then! He was excited...sure enough he hung up the phone and he had showtime channels that weren't previously there! He was also told he had to pay before 8PM that night....little did they know (thank GOD!) That he works night shift and had to be at work by 8PM so he was going to wait until the next morning once he got off to go get the gift cards and pay. Once he got home, his phone was ringing like clockwork and they were almost a little annoyed that he hadn't payed by 8PM the night before but was nice enough to give him 2 extra hours to go get these cards and that was it...he was too tired and told me all of this and asked if i would go get the cards for him. I am so thankful that he asked for my help because I knew right away this was the most sketchy thing I have ever heard in my entire life! So I got on direct TVs website and called the number for customer service and put her on speaker phone. As soon as I said e- bay, the lady laughed out loud and then almost stopping herself saying "No mama that's a scam all the way" Direct tv has Absolutely nothing to do with ebay on a promotional level or business level at all! My dad was in complete shock to hear all of this but I'm just thankful he wasn't given more grief than he is already having to bare by losing my mother! This is disappointing to say the least. The guy had an Indian accent and they had a legit waiting call center with waiting elevator music and all! I know this because once I found out it was a scam, I had some fun and called them back to "pay" with my ebay cards pretending I was his wife...He must have not wanted to give us that discount after all because he was getting ready to walk me through giving him my gift card numbers when I disappointed him to the point he hung up on me! I had fun scamming a scammer by acting like I didn't know where the numbers were, or by giving him fake ones that wouldn't work....once he realized he wasn't going to be able to get money, I told him if he ever called this number again I would personally find him myself to make sure he never did again! I am in Huntsville Alabama so please folks beware of this stupid mess...there is no reason that a company should ask you to do these things at all!
