I first noticed my phone had stopped making and receiving calls. The screen showed 'call failed' before even attempting the call. Then I opened my computer to find a large red pop up screen warning that all my sensitive information was in jeopardy, and to call the number given for Apple Tech Support. The 'technician' then got access to my screen and did a 'diagnostic test'. He explained it was not a computer virus, but rather the whole network at the home was vulnerable, which is why my phone had stopped working. He said there was no Firewall protection, and all computers or phones connected through our home internet were vulnerable. The fact that my phone wasn't working lent validity to his argument. His recommendation was to purchase Network Protection, which he could not sell, but he recommended a company to purchase over the internet. The price tag was hefty. While we were talking, my daughter looked up the company he recommended and determined it was likely bogus. I hung up and called Apple. 2 hours later, my computer was declared squeaky clean. The real Apple Technician says she had never heard of scammers linking to both phone and computer. We force quit the phone applications, turned it off and on again, and it now works. I had used the phone to check a website on Safari shortly before all of this happened.
