I received numerous calls from Apple Inc throughout the morning. After the fourth call, I decided to answer. Someone claiming to be an Apple employee informed me that Apple had been alerted that my Apple account had been hacked. He said that he needed remote access to assess the situation and fix it. He instructed me to go the Apple Support website and then provided additional information to grant him remote access. Once he had the access, he went to my settings and showed me that me that my firewall and Firevault were both off. He also ran a diagnostic on my computer, which pulled up a screen listing my computer's name and numerous IP addresses. At the bottom of the page, it said that hackers had accessed my system, were uploading information, and my system was about to crash. He then open up a blank document and proceeded to type out what the team would do to remedy the situation. Then, he informed me that the fee would be $250 for one year of Apple Care service or $400, if I wanted lifetime protection. He stated that they could not accept credit card information since the hackers had access to my system and were watching my every move. He said that he did not want them to gain access to my card information. Instead, he said I needed to go to the store and purchase an iTunes gift card as means of payment. At this point, I became increasingly frustrated and started questioning them. He went so far as to transfer me to "his supervisor". I finally disconnected from the remote access and contacted Apple Support for assistance. They suggested that I download Malware Bytes, and the software did indeed pick up on malware, which it removed.
