He responded to my ad for snow removal services. Required "downpayment" of half of contract, with remainder due January 15. Only payment method accepted was email transfer. Provided email address of owner. Willing to discuss details of address, requirements of service, etc., by phone or text.

Used trypical strategies to get me to send money; "only one or two spots left", evening responses, taking care of a sick child (In Halifax for child's surgery, but willing to call), very personable, subltle pressure tactics: only one spot left, wife handling money side of things, wife wants the last two spots filled tonight, etc.

Able to stop falling for the scam just before money was to be sent. Got lucky because I was suspicious by nature, not because he wasn't convincing.
