After searching multiple times for a rental property in San Francisco area a "new listing" appeared among the properties I had been viewing and were familiar with. Since I had been searching over a period of time this does happen and the property met my criteria so I contacted the owner about availability. The follow-up reservation confirmation and invoices came to me via email showing AirBnB to be the sender. I was instructed to use my credit card to pay for the rental via Transferwise.com and received a confirmation of payment also with AirBnB as sender. The reservation and confirmation paperwork looked like all the others I have received from AirBnB including another I booked on this same trip. However, when I arrived at the rental property I found it did not exist. When I called AirBnB they said they did not have that property listing and questioned whether I had been on their site. However, as I said previously I was looking at the same properties that had been on the site each time I looked with the new addition of the property I rented. Although AirBnB did accept my complaint, in the end, they denied any responsibility and we were left with nowhere to stay at 10pm and then had to pay last minute prices for a hotel for 3 days. I have dealt with AirBnB many times in the past and have not had a problem but obviously the security of their website is lacking as they were most definately hacked. Also, when I filed my complaint with AirBnB they informed me that their reservation numbers started with an *** (how was I to know that?) I have since been informed and have read research articles in the media that this is not an uncommon occurrence with AirBnB. Apparently I had too much faith in AirBnB's security and now am out $1400.00.
