This scam began with a window that took control of the user's screen. The window had text telling the user that their system was at risk and they needed to call the phone number on screen. After calling the number, the scammer kept the user on the line for over an hour claiming to show the user issues with their machine, and adding programs which were reported to help, and removing programs which were reported to be issues. The scammer then used the home Wi-Fi network to get into the two other laptops in the home. At this point the scammer had complete ability to control all computers in the home - to move the cursor on all of the screens. For these services, the scammer asked the user to write a check for $499 and take a picture of the check and send it to them (both the picture and physically by mail). they also requested she scan her driver's license and send it to them. When I came to help, we installed malware bytes - a program I know to be good and safe. As we began to run malware bytes, the cursor moved on the screen to close out of malware bytes. After this, the cursor then moved to the control panel of the machine and deleted the malware bytes application. The cursor would also very prominently move away from the Wi-Fi controls as soon as I went to turn Wi-Fi off in order to stop the remote access. During this fight, there was a call from the company to find out what we were doing. When I answered the call, I told the person that I knew this was a scam and that it was malware. The person on the phone would not comply with my demands to sever ties and cancel services. The person kept saying "prove to me that this is malware" finally, I told the person that all I need to give them is my opinion that I think it is not right, and my request that I do not want services from them. Finally the person on the phone agreed to cancel services. The cleanup begins.
