Type of a scam Employment
applied to MANY jobs, I responded to a text I received that I thought was about a job for which I
had applied. Because I am also in school for my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, and
am seeing therapy clients, I was looking for a job that was both remote as well as flexible. The
data entry job fit the bill so I responded. They requested I contact someone in HR named Ms.
Anders and we went back and forth for a couple of days. Because she said they were in CA, I
thought her wanting to text was fine so I didn't worry about it. I was invited to become an
employee and received a signed and dated offer letter the following day that displayed the
company logo, along with the other usual employment documents such as a W4 and job
reponsibilities of the role. The job being remote, they asked me to obtain the needed hardware
and sent me a list of same. Additionally, they were willing to pay for the hardware and sent me a
check in the amount of $3,300 to do so. It was weird that I could NOT use my current
equipment, but oh well. I am Windows and they wanted me to use a Mac. They sent the check
via UPS next day and I deposited it into my Truliant account. After depositing, and being a
former Teller, I noticed a few inconsistencies with the check so called the bank on which it was
drawn, Security State Bank South Texas. The representative at Security State informed me it was
a fraudulent check so I hung up and immediately contacted Truliant to let them know the check
was fraudulent and I was completely unaware at the time of deposit. They began an
investigation and hung up. I immediately began making screen shots of the text conversation of
my interview and subsequent employment and have PDFd that as well. I also scanned and PDFd
a copy of the check and the UPS package. I also have hard copies of everything. The "employer"
is continuing to reach out to me but I have not given them any reason to believe I am
suspicious. They know I have therapy clients this afternoon so not having responded to them is
justified and they should not ask any questions of me. Please contact me at 407-697-3118 with
any questions.
