- Walnut, CA, USA

I was contacted via text message by an unknown number without Caller ID. They briskly told me that they found my resume online and that I was shortlisted for a Remote Editor position. The recruiter told me she was from A Schulman Inc, a plastic manufacturing company in Ohio. She told me I was to immediately add Mr. Gustavo Perez on Google Hangouts for an online interview right away. I looked up the company and Mr. Perez and saw that both exited, but overlooked that his email address ended @gmail.com, not the company address as it should've. "Mr. Perez"'s speech was bizarre, as he talked in a very formal manner with me and it seemed as if he was copy and pasting his replies to me. In one instance, he asked me the same question twice even after I had already answered it. The details of the job and title were very specific, and it appeared to be exactly right up my alley.

He then proceeded to ask me 30 interview questions, which were the most stereotypical questions, such as "Where do you see yourself in five years, What are your weaknesses" etc. When the interview finished, he hinted that I was definitely going to be hired, and told me to report to him the next morning at 8 am to hear the results of my interview. I did so, and even then when he conversed with me it seemed like he was copying and pasting standard robotic messages to me. He repeatedly asked me what bank I was with and what my daily deposit limit was. I was then told I would need to purchase equipment from home to work for the company, and he emailed me a check for approximately *** dollars, and told me I was to make a mobile deposit immediately and contact him when I did. I had some reservations, but I didn't want to ask questions out of fear of losing the position. It was paying *** an hour after all.

I did so, and he told me that he would need his accountant to approve the transfer of the funds. He said I did well, and that I was to report to him the next morning, this time at 7:30 am. It wasn't until I talked to my friends that night that I realized it was most likely a scam and found similar stories online. I called my bank and had them put a hold on that check, and cut off communication with the scammers. Strangely, although I was told to meet him online at 7:30 am, the scammer and the recruiter repeatedly called and messaged me several times at 7 am.
