The scammer/caller had left a voicemail that was hard to understand so I called it back. I was put in touch with an investigator, Paul (I think, as he was hard to understand). He stated that on December 15, 2015 I took out a personal loan and that they are working with the debtor to collect a debt from me. He stated that the investigation was reopened in 2018 and that I received papers in the mail 45 days ago in an attempt to collect the debt. I told him that in 2015 I was happily married and financially stable and did not need any financial help at the time they stated. They also told me that the account I had associated with the loan was a very old bank that was bought out prior to 12/15, so I would not have used that banking info. He proceeded to verify my address and social security number which were both correct and then said that there was an IP address as well as a drivers license number ending in a number that does NOT associate with my drivers license. When I asked him for the IP address he said he did not have that information. I then asked for him to give me the phone number to the company that I supposedly took out this loan with and he said that he did not have that information and that I could look it up online. I told him that by law he is to give me the name, address and phone number of the debtor. He kept repeating that they were hired by the debtor to collect the debt. I ended the call as it all seemed very fishy to me.
