Type of a scam Phishing
After contacting the scammer to prove my innocence of this crime, he was able to successfully terrify me into handing over my Discord account for "investigation." He told me to make a new Discord account for the purpose of the scam that took place.
During the scam, I was told to share my screen and was repeatedly told not to worry about all the money I was spending since I'd be refunded afterward. The scammer tricked me into giving him more personal information during the scam such as my name, address, SSN, mobile number, payment information, and potentially passwords.
This scammer repeatedly reminded me that I had to comply with these requests to get my account back and he showed false percentages of "progress." There was never intent to refund me or hand me my account back. His currency wasn't American either so I knew he was most likely in a different time zone. His tactics were dangerous. He made sure PayPal wasn't going to refund me through requesting specific payments that PayPal states they don't refund, not even if scammed.
Additionally, the scammer requested that I make digital purchases to make sure I lost this money for good. The scammer knows that digital purchases are more difficult to refund and often not ever refunded. His scam relied on ignorance so I'd unknowingly get myself into trouble if I ever found out what he was doing. Considering the current state of my PayPal account, he was successful at accomplishing just this. My ignorance and doubt were constantly replaced by reminders of what I was about to lose if I didn't hand over the money that was being requested.
This scammer took advantage of me when I was already emotionally vulnerable and unable to think straight. Although the entire experience felt off and suspicious as the scam progressed, it was already too late by the time I was starting to be concerned. As a result of this experience, I've learned a significant amount of information and this was a wake-up call. I'm not going to fall for another scam ever again.
The tactics the scammer used were primarily for financial gain, but it's possible if the scam continued without interruption that I'd have been asked to download malicious software. I'm unable to verify for certain what the scammer intended to do with the personal information that he obtained from me, because most of my experience involved losing money. This stated, I'm taking as many steps as possible to avoid further consequences and know he could put the personal information he obtained on the dark web, especially after the scam ended earlier than the scammer expected.
The scammer told me not to tell anyone about what was going on since this investigation was confidential. Because of the fear he used against me and my emotional state at the time, I felt like it wasn't a good idea to keep secrets about something like this and informed family members about the situation. Shortly after losing roughly 1665 dollars, I was told I just fell for a phishing scam.
