When I logged onto my computer it went to screen that said I had been infected by several trojan virus from the websites I had visited and that it would cost me $1500 dollars to get my computer cleaned and repaired. I told him I was on a fixed income and my husband was a veteran. He showed me a list of about 12 websites that had installed a trojan virus and they could see everything I was doing! He proceeded to give a huge discount of $400 and I could pay only $1100 instead, but that I had to give him an echeck on my computer! My computer is screemimg the entire time and flashing a red screen. I did as I was told after about 2 hours of argueing with him. Then he loaded several programs on my computer to prevent this from ever happning again! Needless to say I felt like a fool, but I need my access to my computer as I do online banking and have had a store on Ebay for 20+ years. He said they would call every month and do a sweep of my computer and clean it for me. This was on Nov. 14th, 2023 . . . sure enough he called me every month!

This scammer DID attempt to cash a check for $886 (the form would not let me put in a number). My elderly mother is the victim of this scam via her laptop. Hackers made her laptop go haywire (she does not remember what website she was on when this happened) and there was a phone number to call to "fix the problem". She called it and a man with a thick accent (India?) named Nick from GlobalBytes answered and convinced her to install TeamViewer so that he could take control of her laptop to clean up the problem. Long story short is that he installed tracker devices and spent almost two hours on her laptop copying personal information. He charged $886 and told my mom how to copy her check and turn it into an e-check and how to put it in his dropbox. At one point during the two hours he asked if she lived alone (and then she got a "red flag"!). Because he had access to all of her personal info, we scrambled to freeze her bank accounts, contact Social Security, etc. Her email was also hacked. We were able to stop the e-check and then she got call after call from GlobalBytes on her cell phone and landline. At this point we filed a police report. The entire incident was very distressing to my mom (of course) and a huge hassle to hopefully prevent any identity theft from happening.
