I called the number, was immediately asked for the case number and I was transferred to someone who asked to if I was my name, phone number & social security number and confirm if I was her. She said a debt had gone past collections and was now being pursued in a court case, claimed I owed $5400 (or $15K+ for all the fees, court processing etc) but I could pay it off today for $1080 or make $100 monthly payments until debt was paid off, I could make credit card deposit today to commit to the offer amount, I said I’m unemployed, she said that I could get 30 days more time if I called by EOD and confirmed taking her offer, otherwise they will proceed with civil lawsuit against me - I asked where did the debt originate from, she mispronounced the Bergdorf in Bergdorf Goodman so I didn’t know what she was talking about, but recognized Goodman. I had a credit card there last used in the 1990s and was paid off or dismissed. It was so long ago I don’t remember, but I remember it being on a past credit report. I was really shook, so I said please send the paperwork, I need proof this isn’t fraud, what is the name of your law firm and the address, she got impatient with me, but only said Southern, Aperson Associates. She said I’m sending out a process server with paperwork to you today, but you only have until the end of the day to respond to the payoff offer to have this suit dismissed, to call her back, Madison Reyes at ext 101.
After I hung up I looked online and how that call was a common online “process server” scam, that a closed debt from 35 years has easily gone past the statute of limitations, also in review our conversation there were actions on her part that didn’t line up, like she did not ask to confirm my address nor my email address but said she would send and email me the summons, that I would receive the offer by summons, etc
I’m a senior, these scammers are evil!
