Two Hispanics pulled up in front of my 82 year old mother's house and were wandering around in her front yard looking at a tree stump. My mom asked them if she could help them. They go on to say that they took that tree down for her and was she ready for any other work to be done. She asked them to confirm that they are the ones who took the tree down because she didn't recognize them. They assured her that they were the ones. At this point they had gained her trust because the company that had taken her big tree down and left the stump were a well known legitimate company, but at the moment she couldn't remember the name of the company.
She then goes on to say that she has been wanting to get a few small trees topped, so the two men walked around the property and then said they could top her trees, but they noticed that she could also use some tuck pointing in a couple spots on her brick house, and told her they could do that for free.
So, next my mom invites them inside to sit down at her table to write up a contract for tree trimming and tuck pointing. She signs a contract for $3,900 to do this work. They then ask her to give them a down payment, and they wanted cash. She said she doesn't have that much money sitting around, but they kept pushing her, and asking her how much cash does she have. She then goes down the hall where she keeps spare cash in case of emergencies and brings back $1,000. They ask her if she has more because that isn't enough. She then writes a check for an additional $1,000 to an "April Adams."
At this point one of the guys says to the other one, "The boss will be happy."
On the contract it has a contact name of "Sam" and a phone number 314-465-3836 and the two men set up two days to get the work done on the following Monday and Tuesday. Once the two men got the check and the cash, they proceeded to go to a white pickup truck and they went to the side of the house and splattered gray pain and some mortar in three places, it looked like a child did the work. My mom questioned it, and they assured her that this was just "phase 1" of the repair. After then they quickly left and didn't come back that day.
Unfortunately, the following day, my mom fell and broke her hip and was now hospitalized. She then informs me that she needs to call "Sam" at Midwest Roofing to let them know she won't be there on the agreed upon days. "Sam" was all sugary sweet with his sorrow for her fall and that she would call when she was getting out of hospital.
During the week she was hospitalized, "Sam" called several times asking when she was getting out. My mom then told him that my daughter(me) can be at the house to open the gates so they could get into the yard and do the work. I, along with my husband, also called "Sam" stating that one of us could be there to let them get the work done, but he would not agree to a day or time to show up.
On one of the phone calls to my mom, "Sam" told my mom to just leave a check in the mail box for the remainder of the money, but would not agree to a date of completing the work. At this point, we all knew this whole thing was a fraud, and my mom had been scammed.
I sent text messages, made calls to "Sam" stating he needed to either give my mom a date to complete the work or to return her money. He refused!
He would verbally tell me that he is not going to scam my mom, however, that was the furthest from the truth.
On September 23, 2024, I make a police report. Myself and my mom continued to call and text daily asking for a date to complete the work or return her money. At one point when he did answer, he tried to use scare tactics telling me he knew a lot of people in law enforcement and he would have me arrested for "pretending to be my mom's daughter." Absolutely insane, even though my mom told "Sam" that she is going to have her daughter (me) talk to him about arranging to get the work done since she was in the hospital and would have to go to a rehab facility afterwards.
On September 30, 2024, we made a second police report. The police officer came to my mom's house and used her phone to call "Sam" and left a message telling him to call the O'Fallon, IL police dept. and gave his badge number and a call back number. "Sam" did not respond.
Now, here it is October 15, 2024, and the work is not done, "Sam" won't answer his phone, and my mother is out $2,000 and needs to have the brick that they defaced repaired.
Help! My poor 82 year old mother was scammed due to her trusting nature and her dementia. What a sad world we live in when nasty humans are out on the prowl looking for vulnerable elderly people to take advantage of. Please watch out for our elderly family members as they are so easily tricked. And stay clear of the fake company, "Midwest Roofing" as they have no qualms about stealing money from you!!!!!!!!!!!
