- Alameda, CA, USA

On Friday, October 12, 2023 at around 1:00 pm in the afternoon, I received a call from a 1 (877) 255-5923 phone number. After answering, an individual named Alex claimed he was from Goldman Sachs and wanted to verify if I had made a recent Amazon purchase on my Apple Card - the card that Goldman Sachs services. I said that I did not. He said that in order to prevent this from happening in the future, we need to set up a message alert system and that in order to do this, I needed to verify this one-time purchase on my apple card. That's when I said this sounded like a scam, to which he then requested that I look up the phone number online. I did and I discovered that the phone number was in fact the phone number for Apple Card Support/Goldman Sachs. This was my mistake and I realized how stupid it was in hindsight. But unfortunately, I did believe that "Alex" was an authorized representative from Apple support and, thus, entrusted him with any information he requested. Upon which, he asked for and I responded with my SSN, DOB, credit card number, CVV, expiration date, and so on.

He said that after accepting the charge, the money would be refunded in 10 minutes by the retailer. There were two charges: one for $0.27 and another for $2,692.85. Both were charged to an online retailer called, noon - which I found out is based in Dubai, UAE.

After realizing that the charge was not refunded and "Alex" had hung up on me, I called the number myself. I explained my situation to an Apple Card Specialist named Candace on the phone, explaining what I had done with this "Alex". She then said that there was no Alex there and that I had been a victim of spoofing - where scammers mask their phone number with the caller ID of another legitimate company/organization/individual. Once she told me this, my heart literally sank. To this day, I haven't really eaten as I have lost my appetite due to just the sheer shock of this situation. Candace then recommended that I change my passwords and such. I told her I would and that I would try to resolve the matter. I then immediately disputed the transactions through my apple wallet. After which, I contacted apple support again - but via text - and had exchanges with three Apple Card Specialists: Ricky, Kenyatta, and Fernanda. I explained my situation to all three of them and they told me that my disputes are being processed - hopefully within two billing cycles or no more than 90 days.

Ultimately, this scammer, "Alex", managed to steal both my identity and credit card information so that he could make fraudulent online purchases which I had absolutely no intention of making. As mentioned, I have contacted my local authorities and filed an official police report with them to ensure that this incident is continuing to escalate to the proper authorities. I have also placed an initial fraud alert on my credit report and am currently considering a credit freeze.

To make matters even more "interesting" - so to speak - I was contacted by the exact same scammer with the same spoofed phone number, and they tried pulling off the exact same scam on me again! I'll never forget it. I was in the middle of volunteering at my local food bank and I get this call. Immediately, I get up and walk away to somewhere private so that I can continue this conversation. And by "continue the conversation," I mean try to convince or trick him into giving me identifiable information on him and his fellow scammers. This is when he actually put me on the phone with the "Alex" that I spoke with on October 12. He claimed to be in Chicago, IL - which I highly doubt - and that he was making thousands of dollars per day pulling this same scam on others. He even asked if I wanted to take part and tried to get me to give up my social media platforms, which I did not. After leaving the food bank, he continued to call me, but this time using different spoofed phone numbers. This is when the verbal jousting started to become an annoyance and at one point, after refusing to give up his real phone number from which he was calling me from, began to escalate to physical/violent threats.

As of today, I thankfully haven't received anymore calls from the scammer or any other spam calls for that matter.
