In attempting to book travel flights through Air Canada I called a phone number that was given on the internet as an answer to one of the FAQ-type prompts. That number was 1-844-604-2944. As it turns out, of course, this was not a legitimate number for Air Canada. I was on the phone for about 2 hours with the 'agent' booking the flights. The 'agent' seemed quite knowledgeable about the booking process and was able to provide legitimate flight numbers, arrival/departure times, etc. In the end I was charged about $3,000 on my credit card.

About a half hour after I finished with the 'agent' I got a call from Air Canada/Aeroplan indicating someone was trying to use my Aeroplan number and email to book flights. In following up with Air Canada/Aeroplan it became evident that, in fact, I had not booked any flights through the 'agent' as they didn't have any record of the booking.

During the course of the follow-up I subsequently changed my email password and called the credit card company to report the scam and cancel the card.
