I was contacted out of blue via text to become a secret shopper. They sent me a letter and check for $2540.00. They told me to visit Wal-Mart, purchase 4 - $500 gift cards, I keep $400 and the remaining $140 was for the second task. I called two of banks and they confirmed this was a scam. The check was from W.H Bass, Inc out of Georgia. The bank said this Tim Crawford Ph.D was the Survey Evaluation Coordinator was related to fraudulent activities and have cleaned out one clients account and 6 other people have called in about the same thing. There are multiple typos in this letter which screams Scam! This is a scam! Run away!
Secret Shopper Scam

What happened they didn’t finish the letter. I want to know what happened with the four credit cards. I received the same information and I want to know if it is a scam I was going to take the check to the bank today and open an account and do my mystery shopping

This is a scam! They will take the money and you will be responsible for covering the amount of the check.

I clicked into a page on social media about mystery shopping. I had a friend who did this with a legit company. I was contacted that I would receive instructions in the mail soon. The parcel came on 6/21/21 and it contained a letter with instructions and a cashier's check in the amount of $2540. I was supposed to text Tim Crawford at 913-370-4774 to confirm receipt of the parcel and get instructions on what to do with the gift cards they were asking me to purchase at Walmart as a mystery shopper. I was supposed to deposit the cashier's check and then use that money to buy 4 $500 gift cards, then $400 would be left for me and $140 left for a second task. I became concerned as soon as I saw the check and letter. I had heard about scams like this. I did not text the person to tell them I had received the parcel, so I'm wondering if they will be contacting me. I researched the cashier's check right away, since I used to work at a bank, I know about the routing numbers and how to match them. This check has the appearance of a good check, but its name and routing number do not match. When I entered the routing info of 103100551 that bank had a warning about fraudulent cashier's checks using its routing number. The bank name on the check was Mountain America Credit Union, which appears to be real. The check was made payable to me, but said from George Carter. The letter said the contact was Tim Crawford, PhD, the survey evaluation coordinator. After I completed the purchases at Walmart, I was supposed to fill out the survey on the back of the letter to tell my experience as a mystery shopper.
