I was referred by a colleague to Michelle Macchia on 2/2020 for billing services related to my private practice as a **** ************ ******** ************ in North Carolina. On June 22, 2020, I signed a contract with her billing service, Macchia Billing Service, including a BAA and a HIPPA agreement. I gave her the username and password to my portal and all of my accounts. I told her that I only wanted her to handle my billing because the previous billing service had made errors by having too many people handle my accounts. Michelle was excellent for the first year. March 2021, Michelle stated she was having surgeries and doctors appointments. She hired an assistant, Penny Jones. From March 2021 until December 2021, Michelle Macchia and Penny Jones both handled my billing. We agreed to no more than 15 hours per week. December 2021, I was informed by Michelle that Penny was ill and in a hospital in Miami. I learned that Penny lived in Florida, not in New Jersey. Penny had injested a bottle of Drano and her esophagus was replaced with her colon and she had to have intestines removed. Penny called me in December 2021 while in the hospital for 2 months in Miami the day before she was undergoing a serious surgery. She also caught COVID in the hospital. Based on her health conditions and consumption of narcotics, I asked Michelle that Penny not handle any more of my billing because mistakes were being made. Despite my request, Penny began working on my billing account in March 2022 without my knowledge. Penny didn't communicate with me and ran patient credit cards without my permission. Egregious billing errors were made by Macchia Billing. I asked for a Zoom meeting with both Michelle and Penny to review patient accounts and correct errors. We met in May 2022 via 3 way telephone call. They sent me a spread sheet of patient accounts. I informed them of many errors I saw. We were supposed to have a follow up Zoom call in June 2022 but that did not happen. In March and April of 2022, my patients expressed complaints about charges made on their credit cards by my billing service. Penny confirmed that she had been running my patient credit cards without my consent for inaccurate amounts. Patients made many complaints about Michelle and Penny. Michelle and Penny did not respond to my patient billing questions nor my billing questions. In April and May 2022, Michelle's charges for her billing services increased 200%. Michelle demanded payment via PayPal but my PayPal had been hacked into. I asked her if I could mail her a check or use Zelle. Michelle continued billing for hours yet no results came from the hours she charged. I confronted her; she did not have clear answers. July 2022, I suspected that she had been padding her invoices with hours and billing me for hours that were not reflective of the results I was receiving. I went into my patient portal and saw my HIPPA audit log. There were IP addresses from Florida, New Jersey, Californian, Mississippi, Colorado, Illinois, and a few other states who logged into my confidential patient portal regularly. I asked Michelle how many people she had given my user name and password to without my permission. She replied "at least 6." She broke HIPPA violations and gave strangers access to my client's financial info. I learned that there was no such legal business entity as Macchia Billing Services. She committed fraud. There is no such registered business as Machhia Billing Service. She overcharged and underdelivered. She was deceptive in her practices. I would like to request a refund from her to recoup money I have paid her. Criminal charges for stealing my business financail info, filing fraudulent claims, insurance grad, etc. should be
