Matt Hildebrand was recommended by friends as a contractor for a bathroom renovation we were considering. He came in at a price lower than any of the other contractors that had given an estimate. He wanted cash to keep the price that low. We paid a $5500.00 deposit with the work to start May 1st. He called and delayed the work to start May 22nd. We agreed that the work would start May 27th as we had a vacation planned during the 22nd. On the 27th a worker came and over two days took down all the bathroom walls. The debris was left on our front porch. Matt Hildebrand asked for a further payment of $2360.00 as it was agreed to be paid after the demolition. No more work was done on the bathroom and Matt Hildebrand gave excuses of he had to fire his crew because of poor work performance and now he was behind. He continued to promise to show up to do work but never came. He did come on three separate days but only worked less than an hour each time. On one occasion he built a knee wall of 2 x 4's not in the place where it should have been built. On June 1st he came to do plumbing work but couldn't because he need special plumbing valves and convinced use to give him another payment of $3200.00 so he could buy the plumbing. He left to purchase the plumbing but did not return. He showed up with pieces of drywall to rebuild the one bathroom wall. After an hour he said he needed 2 x 3's to block in the wall for the drywall to fit. he left and did not return. He was confronted about not providing any material to do the job on three occasions. The first time he showed up with three pieces of granite he claimed were for the shower sill and seat. A second time he came with two open boxes of tile claiming they were the tiles for the shower. There wasn't enough tiles to complete the job. On the third occasion he was to order a shower pan from Bath Depot. A week later he said we were supposed to order the shower pan and pay for it. When confronted with the fact we had given him $7000.00 and he should be the one ordering the shower pan. He then produced a receipt saying he had put a deposit on a shower pan it was learned a week later he had canceled the order and got his money back. At one time he then produced a sheet of paper showing the schedule of work he was going to do on the bathroom over the next week. He did not show up that week. He continually gave excuses like his trailer broke down, his truck was in the shop for repairs and he had a new crew of men comings from out west to help him clear his jobs. Finally on June 29th we fired Matt Hildebrand demanding our money back. He said he would return the money the next day but we have not heard from him. It is clear to us Matt Hildebrand took our money with no intention to complete any work at our home.
