Tried to activate McAfee after inputting info but not working and receive notice that McAfee rep is calling me. David Warner addresses himself as the rep and in summary says he knows what the problem is, gets access in to the PC. Under DOS access types away and show where the problem is and say this needs to be corrected due to access issues I have and others can get into the system. Not something under McAfee, but they work with a third party and can fix it. Gets back on and is arranging cost to fix it advises and says lifetime assistance but need to sign paper confirming am agreeable before fixing. Weak moment and sign off gets my credit card for the amount. Then comes back a few minutes later and show within the PC that it's fixed by the third party and the McAfee program under my assumed license number installed. Signs off and all is in order. A few days later still feeling a little off, I check the installed program and it's not a licensed program that I asked to be installed but a trial copy. Now feeling concerned, deleted that McAfee installed trial program, installed the licensed copy and scanned for malware with McAfee and another program. Computer is clean. Then start checking on the web and first find McAfee info that says we will never call you to offer assistance and if you are called it is a scam. Then find info on "David Warner" who had an Indian accent that he is involved with a McAfee activation scam. Further info advised that they insert a batch file pretending it is the problem, then come back show that all is clear and remove the batch file. The third party that supposedly does the work provides a phone number that when called tells you they are not available and disconnects at all hours of the day. The office location is a Wyoming registered agent location. There is no physical address for the company. The website I originally logged into was similar to the real McAfee site, but was a fraud site set up to scam folks who accidently logged in. A month later "David Warner" called me back introducing himself as a McAfee employee with his phone number as a California number, while previously, the phone number listed was a Texas number. I immediately hung up and he never called again. My calls with him are recorded.
