Fashion Week Internships Reports & Reviews (1)

- Budd Lake, NJ, USA

I had applied to this internship program called Fashion Week Internships (FWI) on their website, https://www.fashionweekinternships.com which seems very reliable. This website and company has testimonials and videos featuring students speaking about their experiences. While I was weary of it, I did extensive research into this company, looking at old reviews and asked my career advisor about it. My school career advisor had told me she had students work for this company in the past, before Covid 19 had hit. My career advisor, myself and 2 others had helped me look into this company and we deemed it safe. There were a few negative reviews but they seemed to be catered towards Covid 19 and how that altered their experience.

I applied to do an 18 week program starting in February of 2023 and originally sent my application in November of 2022. I got accepted into the program and they made me feel really good about my application, they told me I was a perfect fit and we went ahead with the interview. I spoke to a man, who I was told was named Christian, he conducted the first interview with me on November 30th 2022 from a UK phone number. I spoke to him on another occasion to speak about what would be the best fit for me. After many emails back and forth, they explained the placement would take a while since it was the holiday season so for most of December I was unable to communicate with them. And I was still unsure of my placement and how to move forward with this program.

My career advisor had told me I shouldn't pay until I know what I will be doing. They had sent me 5 job possibilities but were very vague with what they entailed. When I asked if I could get more information, they told me I had to put a deposit first. I assumed this was so that I wouldn't go behind their back and contact the businesses they would connect me to. So I paid the deposit because they gave me just enough information to let me know what I would be doing. By this time it is January and I have no plane ticket, no visa and no solid internship so I started to worry and ask about when and where to get an apartment and when to schedule a flight and they told me to wait until I interviewed with the companies so I would know the location and exact dates. This all seemed to make sense at the time because there were answers to every question I had and they were valid but still not promising. Then I had an interview scheduled and they told me the final program amount was due before I could go on this interview, so I paid it as I had already paid the first half I was already all in.

As it was getting closer to the interview, it was fashion week so they told me the company is busy with fashion week and they were trying to get in contact with them, weeks kept going by with no update. Every email they sent me was in response to one I sent to them, they were not proactive about anything and very vague the entire time. At one point I got fed up and did more research on them and found a recent review saying that they are a scam, the reviewer said she/he had gone through the process with them around this time last year and still has not received an internship or his/her money back. I ended up confronting them about this, I told them I was getting worried that they were scamming me as I had found some more negative reviews online that were not only connected to Covid-19. They had reassured me and told me they were trying to get me an interview. I tried calling the phone number on their website and at the foot of their emails and every call did not go through. I have not heard from them since and it is past my supposed internship start date. I have tried to contact my bank to retrieve my money back but it was a wire transfer so it is difficult to get help with this. I really hope the ScamPulse.com can help me get my money back in full, and report this company so there are no other hopeful students getting scammed.

After accepting that this was a scam I did deeper research on the company that the money was wired to - Hoffman Jones Group Ltd. It seems like the owner of that company is named Charles Alexander Ejogo. I'm wondering if he is the new owner of Fashion Week Internships and the previous owner was not a scammer which would make sense why there are student testimonials and why my career advisor knows students who have worked for this internship. I have included an attachment of an invoice they used to request money from me via wire transfers. These are the email contacts I have for them: Main Contact - [email protected] (Sophie), Program Manager - [email protected] (Christian), and Program Fees - [email protected] (Sarah). They all use the same phone number: +44 203 002 0583 and address: Orega, 3rd Floor, 70 Gracechurch Street, London, EC3V 0HR. Please help me with this, it had truly affected me financially, mentally and emotionally, I do not wish for anyone else to have to go through this. Thank you in advance, please let me know if there is any other information you may need from me.
