I freelance design on Freelancer.com. I bid on a job that paid by the hour and wanted a long term relationship. Later on a "recruiter" (username: farmerlori2) found me there directing me to someone impersonating a real Dover Corporation employee - Jay Kloosterboer (HR Supervisor (also said he was Online Hiring Manager)). I was given a Skype contact and google contact and told he was ready to meet with me there. I thought I had my guard up the whole time... Interviewed for nearly 2 hours on IM of Skype (didn't accept my video call). Later that day I was told I had the job and they were looking for 30 hours a week and pay was 25 an hour (all from home). He emailed me 2 HR forms (attached 1 - the other was a Letter of Obligation to sign) to complete then later that day a separate email ([email protected]) emailed me a front and back image of a $920.89 check written out to me and told me to deposit it and standby until it processed and they would put me in contact with a specific vendor to purchase my "work computer/equipment required". I deposited it but immediately contacted Dover Corp - found out it was a scam and contacted my bank to cancel the transaction. I didn't give any personal information such as s.s. or bank account #s - they did want the transaction confirmation # though. Had i continued moving forward - he was going to send a W-4
He posed as the real Jay Kloosterboer involving real team members from the different departments. It was suspicious yet oddly convincing. I can't believe I didn't catch onto the use of gmail accounts and not @dovercorp.com sooner. I just copy and pasted the addresses.. I feel like a fool..
