We searched for a hotel room online, a website came up with the best deal - booking.com. We payed and received a confirmation from the website - did not know it was a rental property instead of an hotel. After receiving the confirmation notice, we went to the beach. When we attempted to access the room, we were denied entrance. I contacted the 'help' line and was barged with a slue of hateful text 'warning me that I am not to enter the room because I did not pay a security deposit'. We were in Maui so 1 bar of phone service, out side of populated areas is not unusual. The vendor sent me what should have been a hyperlink, when I attempted to tell her there was no link, but a stream of letters and numbers, she basically called me a liar and threaten to contact the booking service and have the place additional fees on my card.. I'm not sure if this counts as a scam, but it seems a legit business would tell you of all the expenses before taking a non-returnable fee. and of course they found a reason to keep the deposit.
