The purpose of this letter is to report a fraudulent act done to me on Monday, March 31, 2025.
A man, calling himself, “Daniel” 888-575-9266, called me at around 2:00 PM, representing himself as
from the collection Department of Eversource Gas Company, stating that he needed to collect all past
due balances on my account, because the company had just sent a man to my residence to shut off
the gas. He said that if I paid the balance of $800.00, in full and in cash, that he could tell the man the
bill was paid and that he won’t shut off the gas. I told him that I could pay the man cash as long as I
got a receipt, to which he told me that the man was not authorized to take payments and that I would
have to go to a CVS store to make the cash payment.
I agreed to this arrangement and drove down to the CVS store on Bridge Street with him
still on the phone instructing me what to do and say. I was told by Daniel, that I was to tell the cashier
that I wanted to make a cash payment to their system from a scanned image of a bar code that
Daniel had texted me. There were two bar codes, one for $500.00 and the second one for $300.00.
The cashier had no luck making it work and I left the store. Daniel instructed me to go to several other
stores around town, about 5 or 6 stores, in all with no luck with this scanning procedure. Finally
ending up at a Family Dollar store on Bridge Street, where the manager was able to get
one scan for $500.00 to work but the one for $300.00 did not work because the system won’t take
more than one per customer. About 2 to 3 hours went by and I told him that I wasn’t doing this any
more and that I would make the $300.00 payment the next day, to that he agreed and hung up the
phone.
Once home, I called the Eversource Company and told her what I had done and she informed me
that Eversource would never make account collections like that, to which I finally realized that I was
scammed for $500.00 cash. I am 80 years old and have very little earnings and not much savings and
this scam has hurt me greatly. It is doubtful that I’ll ever see any of the money that was stolen, but I
hope by telling my story, I can help some other people to be on the “look out” for possible scam
situations like mine.
