I was emailed regarding a position (it was a very similar I had just applied to but different company). The job matched my background perfectly. The interview was done on Microsoft teams just through text. I did think it was weird, but it fit the position as I answered essay based questions so it was similar to the work I would be doing. I talked with someone with a thick sounding accent from “hr”. I then got offered the job from the person who interviewed me on teams. I looked up the company and the people in correspondence through email. Everything seemed legitimate. I signed my intent letter and w4. I gave them my social, bank info and address. Everything was through docusign, which I have used before. The following day I was contacted through teams again to go over my onboarding. Going over the job and things I will be doing. He went over equipment I will be receiving from the company for my home office. He mentioned the finance department will be sending me a check. At this point I knew it was a scam, but I had already given my info. They emailed me a check for a little under $14,000 to get my startup equipment and my startup bonus. He never said I will be purchasing it myself. He wants me to print out the check and mobile deposit. That is how I left everything. I never printed the check and don’t know what to do next. I realize it is a scam and just don’t want them to use my information for identity theft. I’m really not sure where these people are located. It looks like the names on some of the emails are people who worked for the actual company years ago, or people who work for a company with a similar name, as I saw on LinkedIn.
