I was contacted via linkedin and quickly received a priority USPS mailing. He followed up via e-mail but after several searches this is definitely a scam. Beware the names "David Schmidt" and "AccionResearch.com"

Was contacted via social media to get paid while conducting "mystery shopper" assignments. Received a letter and check via USPS Priority Mail. Check was for $2,375.90. The letter had instuctions to cash the check within 24 hours and keep $350 for commission and $25.90 for expenses. The remaining $2,000 was to be used to purchase "Steam Wallet" gift cards in denominations of $50, $100, $200. Once the cards were purchased, I was to scratch off the back of the card to reveal the code, take a picture of the front and back of the cards and email them to the address given in the letter. I called the phone number listed in the email and left a message. I then checked the website provided. Both the letter and the website contained many spelling errors. I then called the bank on the "Cashiers Check". The bank was legitimate and I asked them if they could confirm if the check was real. I gave them the number on the check and they confirmed it was FAKE. I'm glad I'm not a complete [censored].

After receiving check, I decided to check Better Businees Bureau and the for scam activity and found the same story. They are already in the reports.

This is the “be a secret shopper” scam; I recognized it immediately in the initial targeting e-mail (overflowing with typos, poor grammar, and broken English), and wanted to see how far they would take it. I responded with an e-mail and an address. I quickly received confirmation of acceptance as well as a Priority Mail envelope the next day. Sure enough, there was enclosed a “real”-looking cashier’s check for $2,360.30 and instructions to deposit, purchase gift cards, e-mail the codes on the cards, etc. (Many of the “security features” that are supposed to be present on real checks are absent, including watermarks & security verification numbers.) Of course I did none of these things. They have now begun harassing me via text & pushing me to deposit the check and send them the information on the gift cards. Folks, these people can be ruthless - be diligent! Fight back! Report every one you find out about!!!

I got a referral to be a silent shopper. It turns out, my friends *** **  Account had been hack, but thinking it was her I signed up with Accion Research. They sent me a check for $2,360 dollars to buy *** Cards at ***, ***, and *** ***. 10 cards at $200 a piece, and my commission would be $360. I purchased the cards at the various stores, scratched off the back of them, and sent photos of the cards back to the contact person at Accion. The next day, the check bounced, and my account was over drawn $2,000 plus dollars. I filled a police report, contacted my bank, as well as ***. *** is going to see if they can shut the cards down, and I should be hearing back from the ***  *** *** by the end of the week. In hindsight, I feel like a total [censored] for falling for this, but the got me.
