Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

The business Offered a 5000 dollar cash prize. Called the phone number on the card and then called the dealer ship both places said I won the cash prize of 5000 dollars. I showed up at the dealer ship. They did a whole dog and pony show. Spinning of wheels giving out fake lottery tickets that were supposed to give you more cash off a car even though the flyer said NO purchase necessary. Said that California law doesn’t allow them to give out cash prizes. Also said that I didn’t win the cash prize even though I did. This business is disgusting and the owner and staff should be in jail.

Type of a scam Online Purchase

‘Eric’ reaches out to me via text, interested in my car for sale online. He requested a VP report be sent to him before he came to check out the car. He claims it is a cheaper version of a Carfax report; $20. He gave the following website for me to request the report: Vehicle-sproof.com. Interesting items to note- I don’t think he read the ad or he would not have needed to ask my name and he would have seen that I’ve indicated the Carfax is available.

Type of a scam Employment

A few weeks ago I was trolling one of the many job boards out there when I stumbled upon what seemed like a great job. A construction company based in San Diego was looking for a remote designer with marketing experience to help them bolster their web and social media presence. I took a look at their site: Wow, are they ever right! Their social media was really sparse, their site had a copyright dating back half a decade, and the design could certainly use a nice polish.

So I applied. I made a note of it in my spreadsheet where I track the jobs I've applied for and moved on. A few days later, I got an email. They wanted to interview me! The email came from the Vice President of the company, who also had his photo on their website. He gave me a list of times that were available for their subcontracted HR agency. I set up the phone interview. It was pretty quick and was just the standard HR interview questions. All good so far. He said he would get back to me in a day or so. The next day the contracted HR person wrote saying they were ready to offer me a position. Was I ready? I told him I'd need to take a day or so to think it over. The benefits were a little slim, but I was hungry for this one. I wanted to work remote as I live in NYC and I've grown weary of the MTA.

He even sent me a list of hardware and software they'd purchase for me! A top of the line *** *** (they even listed out all the specs). I've never been much of a fan of *** tablets, but they were offering me a *** *** 22". And of course, the full *** *** *** *** and *** *** ***. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, right?

So they sent me a check through ***. I was so excited I practically danced to the ATM to deposit it (yeah, I'm old school, I didn't photograph it into my bank's app). A couple days later, they wrote to say the funds had cleared on their end. They wanted me to check on my balance to see if the funds had cleared on my end. This is where things started to go downhill: the check didn't clear. I called my bank: they told me additional verifications had to be made and the funds wouldn't be available for about 10 business days. I asked why: they told me they typically initiate this process when the account has a history of running a zero balance or one that is often over drafted. Hmm, things are getting creepy. I let my HR contact know, and he said that we didn't have time to wait for that. I asked him if he could direct deposit the funds into my account. He told me that I needed to direct deposit funds directly into his vendor's account.

Hold on a minute, deposit funds into his account? Why aren't we using a credit card? He told me that his vendor only accepts wire transfers or direct deposits. I asked him who his vendor was. He must have made up a name at that point. I looked them up on ***. Nothing. I asked for the URL. He started getting frustrated. At this point, I was past accepting that this was all fake. But part of me wanted this job so badly that I still couldn't believe it. I decided to play along to see how far it would go. He continued to ask me to deposit funds into his vendor's account. He asked what my available cash advance was on my credit cards. He asked me to go to an ATM and withdraw the full amount of the cash advance. I told him I was going to get the cash. I think at that point he somehow got lost in his script. He kept telling me that I needed to deposit cash into an account, even though I was telling him I was ready.

The worst part of all of this for me was that I had given my current company notice. Thankfully, they didn't immediately throw me out into the street. But still. This was a serious lesson learned. I am still smarting from this one. I cannot believe this happened.

Type of a scam Credit Cards

Someone friended me on Instagram, a local celebrity athlete. After several conversations they offered to pay my credit card bills. They paid off a card and asked me to buy some MacBooks and gift cards to donate for charity. Then they would pay off my card again. The payment cleared my card then it was revoked. Before that happened I maxed out my credit card buying the stuff and mailing it to the business I mentioned above

Type of a scam Government Grant

Someone posted as a friend of mine on FB messenger, asking how I was. They asked if I heard the good news. This is what they wrote.

I just want to know if you have heard about the Annual Extended Benefits relief program for Workers/Retirees Humanity support scheme ordered by the IMF and UN.

I saw your name on the website and also when my delivery was made after I contacted John Stevenson. I already got my cash of $500,000 after the payment to confirm my tax fee and verification code by Agent John Stevenson in charge. I saw your name on the list and i want to know if you've got your cash from the authority or not before it closes.

Should I give you the website so you can also go and check your name yourself ?

I was messaged over instagram by @scoutforwilhelminamodels they said they found my instagram through #willyscouts. They told me they were interested in signing me to the agency. I was obviously over the moon about this. After i was given the email of one of the "scouts", they proceeded to tell me what kid of pictures to send in etc. BUT they emphasized 3 TIMES about sending in nudity. And if i refused to do nudity they wouldn't sign me. Not once did they set up a time for me to come meet anyone at the agency to go over a contract etc. I even called Wilhelmina Models directly and they said they have no one under the name Sarah S ( the scouts "name" was Sarah S) Her email also ended with gmail.com, NO ONE who works for wilhemina has an email that ends with gmail.com its ALWAYS @wilhelmenia.com

THIS PERSON IS SCAMMING GIRLS WITH A MODELING AGENCY TO GET NUDE PICTURES. PLEASE ME SO CAREFUL I ALMOST FELL FOR IT.

Typical your auto warranty is about to expire. Is there no way to find the business that is making all of these phone calls? They hang up the second you speak to them. I’m getting at least 4 of these phone calls a day.
