I returned a call from an unknown number, and it sounded like they identified themselves as the IRS. This caught my attention, so I was hesitant when they asked for my name. I asked them to repeat where they were calling from. They said Washington D.C., but I now realize the number is from Washington state. I followed up with asking what they were calling about. They hung up almost immediately, which leads me to believe they were trying to scam me.

Type of a scam Credit Cards

Was contacted by a man claiming to be Allen Smith about taking pictures for a family reunion. I only take pictures for family and friends so this was very shocking to see and immediately I was suspicious. He would only take credit cards and recommended I download his credit card merchant to process the card. He did not take anything from me but due to my curiosity I did a reverse search on his phone number to discover other people had been contacted by him also.

Type of a scam Credit Repair/Debt Relief

As of late, I have been receiving calls regarding reducing my credit card debt. They indicate, on the robo call, that they are card member services and that I'm eligible for credit payment reduction. The voices on the robo call and the subsequent "representative" were foreign (possibly indian). Thankfully I don't carry much credit card debt. At the time of the last incident, I was getting irritated by the number of calls I was receiving and decided to stay on the line to ask them to stop calling. When I did so they immediately hung-up. I felt this was odd, normally they confirm the cancellation of calls or some other procedure. So I called the number (1-800-945-2000) back. I was connected to the Chase automated phone system. I don't have a Chase credit card or account. I was able to talk to a customer service representative who notified me that this was a common phishing scam and she wasn't able to help. I have noticed these phone calls come from a variety of phone numbers both from location specific area codes, such as California, Texas, and Florida, and 800 numbers.

Type of a scam Government Grant

Received a call from an Indian speaking person saying that I had been selected to receive a government grant for $8795. He said I was 1 in 1500 selected to receive this grant. He gave me another number to call. When I called it was an Indian speaking lady. She asked for my bank account number and my social security number. I said no. She then said the only way I could get the money is if I wired $299.95 for a deposit through Western Union or Money Gram. I told her that this is a scam and that I would be reporting them to the BBB. She hung up on me.

I received a phone call this morning and it was an automated call from the County Court House and that I should call a number regarding a lawsuit. When I came home this afternoon there was a voice message requesting that they return a call to 206-201-0042. I called the number and spoke with a gentleman who said he was from the IRS. I know the IRS doesn't call people at home so I called him out on the fact that I knew he wasn't from the IRS to which he hung up on me.

US TREASURY PHONE SCAN

Today I received a phone call from 573-273-1164. The caller said he was called from the Legal Dept of the US Treasury. Said he received a claim from the IRS today that I did not file my taxes in 2010 (which I did) and that I had a warrant for my arrest for tax evasion. He said I could have this cleared today as long as I paid him $6930.00. I asked him to fax me this information. He said he would 10 minutes after I paid. He got upset with me and hung up when I told him I was going to conference him in with my CPA and my Lawyer.
