I received a phone call last night about 8:30 from Mega Millions. I initially called the Parma Police and reported it. They told me to call Scam Squad. I did report this to Scam Squad right before calling BBB. Callers name was Wilson Cambridge. I answered the call on my cell phone. I usually don't answer calls. My caller ID showed private number so I answered. Some of my doctors call from a private number. He said I won $2 million and a Mercedes Benz. All types of things came with the car. Five years of gas, insurance and road side assistance. Caller tried to get me to pay $1700. They would try to pay most of the taxes. I would have to pay one percent taxes. I am supposed to call them back this afternoon at 480-439-6954. I assume I am supposed to go to bank. They will tell me where to send the money. I understand not to call them. Scam Squad told me not to lead them on. When they first called they asked me what I thought. I said I think it is a scam. I don't believe It. I was on the phone about thirty minutes. I hung up. They called again this morning. They wanted to conform I am getting the money. It came up Scam call and private number. I did tell them I am getting the money,

I was reached by phone saying i won $1.5 million. They needed my credit card number to deposit money in my account to take care of the taxes on the money. Then they would send me a cashiers check for the remainder of the winnings. Gave some personal information and they tried to deposit money into my account but they said my bank would not let the transfer go through. Wanted copy of drivers license. Told me to give call back at the number on caller id to finish the process.

According to ScamPulse.com Scam Tracker data, sweepstakes scammers reach out through a variety of channels: phone calls, email, social media, notices in the mail, and text messages. They may impersonate well-known sweepstakes such as Publishers Clearing House or a state or provincial lottery. The "winner" is told to pay taxes or fees before the prize can be awarded. The FTC notes that people increasingly are asked to buy gift cards to pay these fees -- its use is documented further in ScamPulse.com's 2021 in-depth investigative study on gift card fraud -- but they also may be asked to pay via wire transfer or bank deposit into a specified account, or even cash sent by mail.

The prize does not exist, something the people may not realize before paying thousands of dollars that cannot be recouped. However, the harm suffered by lottery fraud victims can far exceed the loss of that money. The losses can put severe strains on family trust, and victims have even committed suicide. In addition, repeat victims may have difficulty ending their involvement in a lottery scam, and they may become money mules who receive and forward money from other lottery fraud victims.

Shortly after his wife died in 2020, a Michigan man in his 80s was contacted by scammers who told him he had won second place in a popular sweepstakes, winning $2.5 million, a brand-new luxury car, and gold medallions. He subsequently began talking to the scammers daily on the phone, reaching out to them even after his daughter changed his phone number. He withdrew money from his retirement account and opened a separate account, sending a total of $72,000 in cash to an address in Mississippi before his daughter cut off contact between him and the scammers.

True lotteries or sweepstakes don't ask for money. If someone wants money for taxes, themselves, or a third party, they are most likely crooks.

You have to enter to win. To win a lottery, you must buy a lottery ticket. To win a sweepstakes or prize, you must have entered first. If you can't remember doing so, that's a red flag.

Call the sweepstakes company directly to see if you won. Publishers Clearing House (PCH) does not call people in advance to tell them they've won. Report PCH imposters or check to see if you have actually won at 800-392-4190.

Check to see if you won a lottery. Call the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries at 440-361-7962 or your local state lottery agency.

Do an internet search of the company, name, or phone number of the person who contacted you.

Law enforcement officials do not call and award prizes. Verify the identity of the caller and do not send money until you do.

Talk to a trusted family member or your bank. They may be able to help.

I received a call on 2/28/2023 from a man named Jim who said he was from Mega Millions and I had won $5.8 million. I have never played Mega Millions. He sent me a picture to my phone of 3 people holding a check dated 2/24/2023 with my name on it. The amount on the check was $5.8 million. Since the check was outdated, I was told I would have to reenter. Jim told me I had come in second place. They said they had tried to call me on 2/24/2023. If I hadn't answered the phone on 2/28 I wouldn't have won at all. Jim said my winnings would be $3.5 million after taxes but I would have pay $200 now to be reentered. When I asked why I had to pay $200, he told me it was because I hadn't answered my phone on 2/24. He told me to send him a money order or pay by credit card. I told him I was handicapped and would have to wait until my daughter got home. He told me to call him when my daughter got home. The check looks real but I know it is s scam.

They wanted me to go buy a gift card to pay them the processing fees, I knew that request did not sound right so I did not buy a gift card. They then mailed me a check to cover the fees. I called the police and had them listen to the messages left on my phone.

Was contacted by David Miller claiming to be with Mega Millions out of California office, and he states that I had won 1.5 million dollars. Fishing for my personal information. Hung up, and blocked number. Filing my report.
