(617) 795-3831 Reports & Reviews (1)

My in-laws (ages mid 70s) were contacted by people pretending to be law enforcement officers and public defenders. They stated that my sister-in-law had been in a car accident and was in jail in Washington, DC. They stated that bail needed to be posted to get her out of jail. Somehow they convinced my in-laws that the payment had to be made in cash. My in-laws claim that the scammers sounded very sophisticated. They helped them locate a bank that was open in Richmond, VA , where my father-in-law was able to withdraw $15,000. The bank teller alerted him that this was most likely a scam, but he ignored her warning. A stranger then came to my in-laws home to collect the cash. They called back later stating that more money was required for the bail, as the other driver had been pregnant and the baby had died. My in-laws then became suspicious. At no time during the initial incident did my in-laws contact their daughter, their son, or the Richmond police to confirm the report. It wasn't until at least almost six hours after the initial call and after the second request for money that they contacted their daughter to see if she was in fact ok. The scammers used two numbers: 617-795-3831 and 857-297-1650. One of the men went by the name David Bell. My in-laws made a report with the Richmond City Police and tried to make a report with the FBI. This occurred on Nov. 26th, beginning around 8am. The transfer of money took place between 10am-11am.
