I initially got a message from a “talent recruiter” saying that they found my resume on ziprecruiter, which I’ve never used before. However, I found out that I actually had applied to their sister company VMLY&R through LinkedIn. When I filled out the application, I did have to agree that my resume could be shared with third parties. I agreed to this, so it checked the boxes on how this company could have obtained my email address even though I didn’t apply to them, as they were under the same umbrella as one of their sister companies that I do actually remember applying to. I got in contact with a man named Phil Jefferson, who is allegedly the Chief of Human Resources at the Motion Content Group. I went through a virtual interview that lasted over an hour, I received a contract that I signed, and was given an employee duty outline, all of which looked very official and legit. Just to be sure, because I didn’t apply to them directly, I did as much research as I could on the company. The parent company, WPP, seemed legit as well and listed Motion Content Group as one of their companies. Since the company is based in London and Los Angeles, the “HR Chief” said the company would give me money to purchase a good computer, a printer, and other things to ensure I could do my job efficiently (write and proofread copy). Long story short, they emailed me a check (I didn’t give them banking info) and I electronically deposited the money. My bank almost instantly put a hold on the deposit. When I called to ask when the money would clear, a representative told me it should clear by the next day. When I woke up today, the money was restricted. I called again to find out why, and another representative told me that the check was fake and that I was being scammed. I confronted the “HR Chief Phil Jefferson” about my findings and he has not contacted me since.
