Merrimac Valley Animal Hospital Reports & Reviews (1)

- Dover, NH, USA

I am a newly returned Peace Corps volunteer whose service was cut short due to the pandemic. I have been home and job searching for the past month through indeed (job search website) with little luck due to hiring freezes and company shut downs. Last weekend I received a request for a cover letter through a company on indeed that sent an email through their secure indeed server. I sent over the cover letter a couple of days later and was informed that they had filled the position but wanted to hire me in a month or so when the pandemic calms down but in the meantime the president of the company needs a PA. He sent me the PA job posting and email to contact if I was interested. It seemed reasonable - $400/week for a part time, mostly work-from-home gig. I just moved into an apartment and was desperate for immediate work so I accepted and was used to employers telling me they could not do in-person interviews due to the coronavirus. I accepted the job and he made it clear that I would need to check my email very frequently, be in constant communication with him, and that if I did well we could talk about working together more long term. He told me he was at a conference in Canada and asked if I was available on Tuesday to receive a check in the mail with my wages along with some extra money so I could go grocery shopping for him and drop off some cash donations to some foster homes that needed help during the pandemic. I got the check in the mail, received a phone call from him asking if it had arrived, and was told to send a deposit receipt to him. Before depositing the check I spoke to my in-laws who said this sounded sketchy and to not do anything for him until the check clears. I figured since this was done through indeed I had nothing to worry about. I sent him a picture of the receipt and when I got home I looked up the company website (it is a real company) and called their number just to ask them who their president is just to give me some peace of mind. As soon as I asked, they told me it is a scam and the scammer has done this to many people in the area. I was told to contact my bank and to forward all communications to them. They told me their indeed email was hacked and that they are working with indeed to investigate further. I called my bank and the police to file a report. Whenever I would read things like this I always thought "that would never happen to me," so please be wary out there. A lot of people are looking for work right now and employment scams are real.
