Imposter Scribd Inc Reports & Reviews (1)

This person had posted a fake job on LinkedIn, posing as the real company Scribd. They listed the company as Scribdd, with the extra "d" on LinkedIn but in every other interaction they spelled it correctly. The job was for a remote proofreader and the description matched a lot of reputable postings. Someone reached out to me via text about scheduling an interview. She claimed to be Angela Smith "a temporary recruiter at Scribd Publishing company" and had mentioned my LinkedIn application. I messaged back and provided them with my email address and Skype profile, as the interviewer was going to reach out to me via the messenger function. The person I chatted with (only through text, never a phone call or video chat) claimed they were Mr. Mason Cole (HR) Director of Human Resources at Scribd. We communicated for half an hour in which I answered interview questions that fit the role I was applying for. At the end of that exchange he said he would pass along our conversation to his supervisor who has final say and that I should log back onto the chat the next morning at 7:00 a.m. When I did, I was offered the position and emailed a letter of hire (I have attached this below, though it does include my name). I was asked to sign the document and send it back, then they would be getting in contact to set up funds for me to purchase supplies. I noticed things were getting fishy when they wanted me to print a check from an email attachment for a mobile deposit to purchase supplies so I could begin work right away. When I mentioned that the mobile app wouldn't accept this he consistently said the problem was on my end and that they could not mail a check or transfer a direct deposit to my bank because access to the funds would be needed immediately. After dealing with this stressful communication for about an hour I left the conversation and started to research. My fiance emailed the real Scribd company about what happened and they confirmed what I experienced was not part of their practices. I searched the real Scribd website and under FAQs there's even a warning about people trying to pull of scams by impersonating the company. Luckily, I did not give them my social security number or bank account information and called my bank to share this story and they reassured me everything should be fine. My next step was to contact ScamPulse.com to figure out the next steps, thus leading me to fill out this form. I have saved the emails and taken screenshots of the text and Skype exchanges as a back up and have ceased all communication with the scammer.
