I was sent the following text message telling my account was locked for an account I don't have. I didn't call the number back because I knew I didn't have an account and it had to be a scam. I just don't want someone else to fall victim.

"mzm-55-ypw Please call (877) 288-4171 now. 88-qalm-pt" (HUNTINGTON ACCT.#3784 STATUS: LOCKED.)

I initially received an email on a student account from someone posing to be a university official. It sounded a little too good to be true, but I thought I had no reason to be suspicious and went ahead and filled out the 'application' on store-surveys.com so that I could be a mystery shopper. When I didn't immediately receive a confirmation email, I thought it was a little weird but went on with my business. A couple a days later I receive a text from someone saying that my application has been approved and to be on the lookout for my assignment details. Again, I expected to receive said details from my email but nothing was sent. A couple of days after the initial text I get a letter in the mail, but I didn't get a chance to see it properly and only saw that it said it was my assignment and a $2350 check. While I'm out I get another text saying if I've received my assignment in the mail and urging me to deposit the check as soon as possible and to contact the person listed in the letter. When I get home and start reading the assignment details I'm beyond suspicious and start feeling like an utter fool, but I decide to confirm my suspicions with my brother who immediately says that by looking at the check and the area codes of the phone numbers and the address on the envelope that its a scam. I'm embarrassed that I fell for the scam but thankful that I didn't cash the check. You can see in the image attached that they wanted me to cash the checks and buy gift cards from Wal-Mart and then text them pictures of the gift cards and the PIN, claiming they needed these details to verify that they weren't banned gift cards. Soon after I read this I took the check to the bank and asked them to verify that the check was a fake, which they did, and asked what to do. They suggested I share my story here and I'm doing so in the hope that no one fall for the scams these men are trying to execute.
