Trust your gut. I generally never open my door to anyone I am not expecting. However, one morning, for whatever reason, I did open the door. There were 2 African- American people, one, a man in his 30s or 40s, the other a younger female, probably early 20s. Very friendly, they were there on behalf of Worldwide Readers, which purports to teach at risk young people work ethics so they can better themselves. Sounds great, right? They have the usual spiel, but when I told them I didn’t have cash, they grinned and produced a credit card reader. I knew in my gut this was odd, but it took me off guard, and I almost felt like they removed my excuse...so I chose an over priced subscription and got my credit card. This is a card I use on a daily basis and pay in full monthly, so it was odd when there were several unsuccessful attempts to run the card. The reps even called in to “headquarters” for advice. The only advice given was to use Apple Pay! After I started asking questions, the reps quickly left. I immediately regretted opening my door. I called my credit card to see if any of the unsuccessful attempts had gotten through. There were several (4-5) pending charges from Worldwide Readers for the $80 subscription fee, but the card representative assured me that those pending charges should drop off by day’s end. Just in case, I notified my husband, who gets text alerts when a charge is made on that credit card, of the situation. Later that day, sure enough, my husband got 2 text alerts. One for a purchase made from Apple, for close to $600.00, the other made from Motorola, for close to $400.00! What I did was stupid, but I’m glad I didn’t compound the issue by using a debit card. At least I had some recourse with the credit card, and I was only out some time, frustration, and pride. Bottom line, don’t feel badly to ignore the doorbell, and if you do open the door, do not ever give any information to Worldwide Readers. They are a sham.
