Selling a car online. Was contacted by scammer asking for a title report because his loan officer requires it. That was the first red flag. Why

would someone buying a low priced car from a used merchandise website need a loan officer? He insisted that the loan officer required a report from vthreport.com. I went to the site and almost entered my info into the purchase agreement when I realized that this was probably a scam.

Then I did some investigation and was relieved to find that I avoided this one.

This is the second email - both different people - that wanted me to use Vthreport.com to get a title report for the vehicle I'm selling. I mentioned CarFax and they refuse. I searched for this title company and they are only 3 months old and don't provide any substantial info in which I can contact them.

The "buyers" use slightly older/formal terms in their sentences that seemed slightly odd even though, overall, it makes sense.

They wanted me to pay for vin verification to buy a vechical but when i looked up business its not listed any where and no bank will do a loan for a 03 car without seeing it.  http://www.vthreport.com/ (Vin TH Report)

The initial reply to our ad (selling a car) on Craigslist was "What's your email ? I've my husband planning to email you." I asked them to set a time to test drive and their response was "I’d like to arrange a time we could meet so I can come look at it . Do you know of any major problems that the vehicle currently has - bad suspension, oil leaks, etc.? I hope everything works out for us to be able to make a deal soon."

I requested a test drive, during a particular time frame and their response was "I am ready to come and talk over the details. I also need to make sure everything is legit on the vehicle. Can you provide a current Title Report? My loan officer has requested a report from www.vthreport.com

I would really feel more comfortable buying a vehicle with an official report"

Scammer: I'd like to come look at it. Is there any bad things on it , like bad suspension, oil leaking etc?

I would like to arrange meeting in few days.

Hope everything will be great and we will make a deal.

Me: I sent we can meet etc...

Scammer: I’m ready to come and talk over the details.

I also need to make sure everything is legit on the vehicle. Can you provide a current Title Report?

My loan officer has requested a report from https://vthreport.com/

I would really feel more comfortable buying a vehicle with an official Title report

Me: I emailed him that I knew he was a scam because I am an IT tech and I did DNS lookup and then searched the website ipaddress and the website just got built in Aug 2018.

Scammer: I have one that is legit from Autochecker. There are only two major companies I know that give valid vehicle history reports. Carfax and autochecker from autotrader. You are welcome to request from other companies if you want. Plus vthreport is not a valid website and they have been reported as a scam. Nice try though, I have also worked for a bank and loan officers dont require that info.

I am attempting to sell my vehicle on craigslist, I get an email from someone saying her husband is interested in purchasing the vehicle and needed my email address. I sent over my email address. The con artist said he wanted to buy the vehicle and that his loan officer needs my title information and a title search from https://vthreport.com. I applied for the report and it said that the credit card was not approved and I needed to use another credit card. Something told me to check my credit card to see if it was charged. I saw that it was charged. The more cards you would have used, the more it would take the money and say the credit cards did not work. Below is the correspondence from the scammer.

I’m ready to come and talk over the details.

I also need to make sure everything is legit on the vehicle. Can you

provide a current Title Report?

My loan officer has requested a report from [https://.vthreport.com]https://.vthreport.com .

I would really feel more comfortable buying a vehicle with an official Title report.

Well I was not as smart as the other 2 people concerning this scam and I purchased the Title Report. I received it and then I started thinking that something wasn't right. So I began researching it and found out that this is a SCAM. Tried to get my money back but they wouldn't refund it.

Lesson learned, check beforehand.
