I specifically asked if he receives his paycheck directly from PECO to which he answered yes. Then, I (stupidly) agreed to do it. He said i'd have to agree with a third-party "independent" verification company. He told me the EXACT questions they would ask and coached me several times on EXACTLY how to answer the questions. Told me not to ask any questions at all during the verification process. Then he patched in to the "independent" verifier. The "independent" verifier answered the call with a friendly greeting from Sunrise Power and Gas and when I asked why she was from Sunrise and not PECO, she quickly switched me to hold (with Sunrise Power and Gas adverts playing) and the initial caller "from PECO" started talking very fast and again tried to coach me on exactly what to say to the verifier. I told him we'd call PECO directly and hung up.
I've filed a complaint about them with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
This has actually happened to us before and our power bill quickly doubled then tripled over what we normally paid.
I've read online that this is a common scam. It's easy to do if you think about it. You call anyone, tell them there's a problem with their power bill, and then get all their information directly from them. He had us read our account number to him, full name/address/last 4 of social, birthday, etc. and we fell for it, thinking he was actually calling us from our power provider. This is a "silent" scam because you won't see the effects of it until months after the call.
