A secretary at my workplace received a phone call direct to her personal desk phone as opposed to a call coming through the receptionists phone. The caller asked for me by name. The secretary transferred the call and I answer my line using my name as per protocol. He apologizes for calling me on my work phone and says that he is sergeant so and so and that I was being held in contempt of court for not showing up on a certain date for jury selection. Today was a pre set court appearance date to rectify my charges and that I would need to leave my place of work now because by order of the law this would need to be done no later than today and at this time. I would need to stay in contact with the sergeant at all times which meant that I would need to switch over to my cell number. The address was the county jail which he says is next to the courthouse. Normally he says that the law has a $1000.00 bond attached to this charge but this has been adjusted. Normally there is a Kiosk where I would be able to take care of my charges but it is out of order and not up for business for a couple more days. This meant that I would need to stop by my bank on the way to court and be prepared to pay the $1000.00---this then would be reimbursed the following day. He would need to know when I was in my car and give him an estimated time of arrival. If my call was dropped, I had two attempts to call back in--otherwise, I could expect to be picked up by the law. Pulling the details out of this ring of scammers was difficult as there were very thick african american and southern accents involved and I had to interrupt and ask for clarification of what had been said. While on the line, I had one with a degree in criminal justice and and ex officer of the law make a call to the scammers and to the sheriff's office. I felt very violated and feel ashamed that this group had me so convinced that I had actually left my office desk and gotten into my car in order to get this over with and behind me so as not to have anything mar my record. I supposed that this part of my state had way different laws about jury duty than I'd ever experienced before. If my husband had not phoned repeatedly and texted me over and over telling me to hang up and not follow through with what I was being told to do I would have been at the least robbed. Still shaking in my boots. I see so many red flags all over the story after slowing to write it out. I think that had it been a direct call to my cell I would have known right off that it was not legit, but because it came through my business phone and they knew several things about me like my home address and my work number, I was fooled.
