My father was scammed TWICE this year by Sapphire tech support. In the first instance, he purchased a new chromebook and was having difficulty connecting his printer. Some how upon calling HP he was connected with Sapphire tech support who he then purchased a multi year servicing contract with. For the first few months they were helpful and provided him assistance with resetting passwords and installing "virus protection" software on his computer on several occasions. In May of 2019, they called him saying they had gone out of business and were going to refund him the balance of his contract. A few days later, a panicked worker from the company called him stating they had over refunded and that if he didn't return the money the man was going to lose his job. After calling and badgering my father several times, the man even when as far as to get my father to allow him to remote into his computer and log into his bank account so he could prove to my father that they had over refunded him. During this interaction they captured his online banking information and actually transferred his own funds from savings to checking to mimic the refund (which had actually never occurred). They then somehow convinced my father that he needed to go and purchase Google Play gift cards totaling $1,000 and that they would take those as the refund. Luckily when he went to purchase the gift cards his debit card was locked after $500 in purchases due to fraud suspicion by his bank. The scammers then called him and had him provided the serial numbers and pin for the gift cards over the phone. Apparently we later learned from the bank fraud department that they use gift cards because they can't be tracked. Unfortunately, my father fell for them again (forgetting that he had this experience just a few months earlier) and allowed the same company to remote in to his computer last week and install virus protection software that they informed him he had previously paid for. They even went as far as to send him a fake contract. Luckily, this time I found out the same day the software was installed and immediately took the computer to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Upon scanning the computer they found the scammers had actually disabled the protection software I had installed after the first scam, infected the computer with viruses damaging his operating systems, and installed bit coin mining software. The scammers identified themselves as working for Sapphire tech support. They continue to call my father (up to 10 times per day) to "help" him. My father is elderly and suffers from early dementia. They know this and continue to target him. Its so bad that I am considering disabling his home phone. This is not a legitimate company and needs to be shutdown!
