An elderly patient of mine was contacted via phone and was manipulated into giving her bank account number in order to get "herbal supplements" for $200. My patient called the company back that same day to cancel and was told they would cancel the order and refund the money; however, the money was still withdrawn from her bank account. My patient did not take her prescribed blood pressure medications for > 1 month because she was told the supplements would "fix" her blood pressure and she would no longer need them. She also had trouble paying for the medications because of the $200 expense. She was told she "couldn't afford not to buy the supplements."
