Microsoft Fraud Report

Date of incident: On or about Monday January 16, 2017

Re. case #: 137 109 6864

Background:

I was having trouble synchronizing my computer calendar with my iPhone. Using the iTunes app, I could not get my computer calendar transferred to my iPhone.

Actions taken:

I entered “microsoft” in google. Several websites came up. I chose one for tech support. A website opened. I called their telephone number because I wanted to talk to live person about my problem and what I needed to do to correct the problem.

I was connected to a tech support employee who identified himself as Jack. He asked what version of Outlook I was using. I told him it was Office365. He told me that Office365 could not be synced with an iPhone, and if that is what I want to do then I would need to get another version of Office.

He asked permission to take control of my computer to see if he could see anything that would help. We looked at my computer calendar and my iCloud calendar.

I was using only my computer calendar.

He recommended I upgrade to Office 2013. I used my computer to show me three versions of Office 2103 and the features they offered. He showed me the cheapest version did not have a calendar option. The middle version had all the applications I normally use, and he said that version could be synced with a phone if the phone had the appropriate applications. He stressed several times he could not help me with a phone and that all he did was work with computers.

I told him that I had just bought the Office365 program in October 2016. He offered to rebate me 100% of my purchase price to be used toward the purchase of a better program such as Office 2013. I told him I would not have bought the office365 version if I had known my computer calendar could not be synced with my cell phone. I then said I thought that Microsoft would do better than just rebate the price of Office365 because of the problems I had been going through. I asked him if he had better discount. I asked me to wait and put me on hold.

He came back and said the best they could do was offer me an additional $36 discount. I had paid $74 for Office365. $74+$36=$110. The price he showed me for Office 2013 was $219. I agreed to buy Office 2013 for $109 ($219-$110=$109).

Jack turned me over to a technician named Brian to do the installation. I watched my screen as Brian uninstalled Office365 and installed Office 2013.

In the process, Brian contacted Microsoft Support and dealt with MarnilleC. (I don’t know if that was a man or a woman so I will refer to MarnilleC as MC.) Brian represented himself as me. MC knew that contact was being made for my computer and used my name in his replies. Brian led MC to believe he was dealing with me. MC asked why I was cancelling my contract for Office365. Brian gave a “BS” answer that was not true.

I also saw Brian using Hacktool.win32/Auto MS!rfn and Hacktool.win32/AutoKMS. I do not know why hack tools were used but it made me suspicious. Why did a Microsoft employee need to use hack tools? That was a Red Flag.

I saw Brian open up a screen that showed the password I use to protect my computer. In all previous dealings with Jack whenever my pass code was needed Jack had me type it in. Then I saw Brian had access to it without my involvement. Another Red Flag.

After Office 2013 was installed Jack returned and got my credit card information to pay the $109 for the new program.

All through the above processes I saw an icon that said Geek Infotechllc. I asked Jack about the icon. I said what is Geek Infotechllc. He said that is the name of our company. I said I thought I was dealing with Microsoft. Jack said “We are a Microsoft dealer.” Another Red Flag.

Before signing OFF Jack told me not to use the computer for a couple of hours because the computer was still in the process of getting all the new systems set up. I asked him before he left to show me my calendar because that was the problem I was having in the first place. He opened Office 2013 and went to the calendar. There were three calendars side by side and all of them were blank. I asked what happened to the information that was on my calendar. He reassured me they would repopulate and my personal information was not lost. Another Red Flag.

Jack signed off, and I immediately had “buyer’s remorse”.

Contact with Microsoft:

I contact Microsoft Fraud Dept. and told them what happened. They told me Microsoft does not have dealers. They do business on line and in their company owned stores only.

They also told me that Microsoft does not sell Office 2013 anymore. It is an outdated program.

I asked what actions I should take. I was told to go to support.microsoft.com/reportascam and fill out a report. They would review the report and notify authorities if they felt there was criminal activity. I have done that.

They also offer to do a scan of my computer to make sure there was no malware inserted. They said if I took my computer to a Microsoft Store it would be free.

If they did it over the internet there would be a charge. I took my computer to the Microsoft store in Austin, Texas.

They gave me a case #: 137 109 6864

Geek Infotechllc:

Jack left me a note with his contact information:

(they are on Pacific Time)

Credit Card:

Jack said the cost would be $109, but the credit card billing shows $110.

I called my credit card company’s fraud department on Tuesday January 17 and asked them to stop payment on my credit card charge. That is pending.
