Better Community Development Grant Reports & Reviews (2)

Contacted by a Facebook friend telling about a grant she’d received. Urged to text them (Thomas D Williams) on a Sunday & received an immediate reply asking for our reply.

- Wilmington, NC, USA

A personal friend reached out to me on Facebook to ask if I had applied for the “Better Community Development Grant “ and told me they had received $100,000 by FedEx. They gave me a website and phone number and told me to contact them to apply - I was curious - the website was incredibly simple and vague - the “agent” would only communicate by text message.

Being in a social media age I reverse searched the phone number and found it was a non fixed VOIP - basically meaning it’s an internet created phone number than can be associated with any address - it was not associated with any official business. At this point the “grant officials “ had my only my name and email address but had sent me a form (attached) that was very basic saying that I needed to fill this out for FedEx to be able to verify my identity to ensure I was the correct Grant recipient.

The conversation grew more strange when I questioned some of the items such as why FedEx needed to know my marital status and whether I was deaf or not. The form also required my monthly income etc - I continued to receive responses such as “this is procedure - we have already verified that you are eligible to receive funds - but this form must be completed “. I ignored the messages. Throughout the evening and the next morning I received messages just saying “Hello?” And “Please complete your application”.

When I responded that I had not had an opportunity I received a text shortly after with a Google Voice Verification Code. With a follow up message from the grant official to “kindly send the code that had just been sent to my phone “ - this seems harmless enough but fortunately I know the signs of a scam!

These codes are in place so that someone that is trying to access an account of yours from another device has to enter it before they can log in. I also searched something like this happening on the internet and confirmed this is definitely a way for scammers to gain access to your google account - where not only would they be able to gain access to personal emails but to stored bank account info, debit and credit card information (personal and potentially information of anyone you’ve ever dealt with / friends - family!).

I confronted the “grant official “ but their response again was that this code would allow them to verify my identity in their database in order to send my my grant money.

This has been going on for over 24 hours - I have even received a fraud alert on my phone from my bank and reached out to them just to ensure my account is still secure at this time.

Please - your personal information can still be stolen with a name and email address!!! Your personal accounts can still be logged into (but you can update the security on your accounts) without permission unless you update your security features and add 2 factor authentication or something similar. Without that I would never have known my information was being actively used without my permission!

Also - no one sends you $100,000 in cash and lets you do whatever you want with it from the government. Good lord I wish it were true - but it’s just not.

Please stay away from this stuff. Thank you!
